In Petrochemicals Capital Technologies in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University has developed processes to upgrade refinery bottoms (residuum) through patented techniques into diesel, kerosene and gasoline. It can both crack and hydrogenate lower grade feedstocks and create syncrude or finished middle distillates. These processes are also quite effective in removing sulfur and nitrogen compounds. All of these processes operate at temperatures and pressures significantly lower than conventional refinery techniques and at a greatly reduced cost.
